All payments on Shelta Asset are processed through Paystack, Nigeria’s leading payment gateway. You pay directly from your tenant dashboard, and your tenancy status updates automatically once a payment is confirmed. This page covers every stage of the payment lifecycle — from your very first payment to renewing or ending your tenancy.

Your first payment

After you sign your lease agreement, your tenancy moves to Awaiting Payment status. Your dashboard’s Payments section will show exactly what is due. The first payment is one of two things, depending on how your tenancy was set up:
If the property carries a security deposit, your first payment is the deposit amount. Once the deposit is paid, your tenancy becomes Active and your monthly rent cycle begins.
You must sign your lease agreement before you can make any payment. If the Pay Now button is unavailable, check whether your agreement has been signed. See Signing Your Lease Agreement.

The nextPayment widget

Every time you open the Payments section, you will see a Next Payment card at the top. It shows:
  • The payment amount in Naira
  • The payment type (Security Deposit, Rent + Service Charge, or Monthly Rent + Service Charge)
  • A label describing what the payment covers
  • The due date (shown for active tenancies on a recurring cycle; blank for the first activation payment)
This widget is your single reference point for what is owed. Pay directly from it by clicking Pay Now.

How to make a payment

1

Go to the Payments section

From your tenant dashboard, open Payments. The Next Payment card shows the amount and type due.
2

Click 'Pay Now'

The platform initialises a payment with Paystack and opens the Paystack checkout. The amount is pre-filled and cannot be changed.
3

Complete payment on Paystack

Enter your card details or use a saved card (see below). Paystack processes the payment securely using industry-standard encryption.
4

Payment confirmation

Once Paystack confirms the transaction, your payment is recorded and your tenancy status updates:
  • If this was your first payment, your tenancy becomes Active.
  • If this was a monthly payment, your next due date moves forward by one month.

Monthly rent and service charge

Once your tenancy is Active, you pay rent every month. Your monthly payment combines two amounts:
  • Monthly rent — the base rent agreed in your lease
  • Service charge — a recurring charge for property management and shared services
Both are collected as a single transaction each month. Your due date is shown in the Next Payment widget and stays consistent each month.
Late payments are managed by the Shelta team. Your lease agreement notes that a 5% penalty per week of delay applies to overdue rent. Pay before or on your due date to avoid charges.

Saving your card for future payments

When you pay through Paystack, you can opt to save your card details for future use. Saved cards appear in the Payment Methods section of your dashboard. The following details are shown for each card:
  • Card brand (Visa, Mastercard, Verve)
  • Last four digits
  • Expiry month and year
  • Bank name
On future payments, you can select a saved card instead of entering your details again, making monthly rent payments faster.

Removing a saved card

1

Open Payment Methods

From the Payments section, scroll to Saved Payment Methods.
2

Find the card to remove

Each saved card shows the brand, last four digits, and expiry date so you can identify it.
3

Click 'Remove'

Select the remove option next to the card. The card is deleted immediately and cannot be used for future payments.
Removing a saved card does not affect any past payments. It only removes the stored authorisation from your account.

Viewing receipts and payment history

Payment receipts

Every successful payment has a receipt you can view from the Payments section. Click any completed payment in your history to open its receipt. The receipt shows:
  • Payment reference number
  • Amount paid
  • Payment type and date
  • Property name and address

Payment history

The full history of your payments is listed below the Next Payment widget. Each entry shows the payment type, amount, status, date, and transaction reference. You can use this to reconcile your records or resolve any queries with the Shelta team.

Requesting a lease renewal

If you want to stay in your property beyond your current lease end date, you can submit a renewal request from your dashboard.
1

Go to your tenancy

Open the Rental section to view your active tenancy details.
2

Submit a renewal request

Select Request Renewal. The Shelta team receives your request immediately.
3

Wait for the team to contact you

A renewal request cannot be approved automatically. The Shelta team will review your tenancy record and contact you to discuss terms for the new lease period. You will receive a response within a few business days.
You can only have one pending renewal request at a time. The button will be unavailable if a request is already under review.

Requesting early termination

If you need to leave before your lease end date, you can submit a voluntary termination request. This does not end your tenancy immediately — the Shelta team processes it and will inform you of any applicable penalties.
Early termination typically carries a penalty of two months’ rent, as stated in your lease agreement. The security deposit is not applied against this penalty. Submit a termination request only if you are certain you need to vacate early.
1

Open your tenancy

From the Rental section, view your active tenancy.
2

Click 'Request Termination'

Select the early termination option.
3

Provide a reason

Enter a clear explanation for your early departure. The reason must be at least 10 characters. This is required for the team to process your request.
4

Add a vacate date (optional)

If you know your intended move-out date, enter it. The Shelta team will take this into account when calculating your obligations.
5

Submit the request

Confirm the request. The Shelta team will contact you to finalise the termination, including any penalty amounts owed.
Paystack sends a webhook to Shelta Asset to confirm payments. This normally completes within a few seconds. If your tenancy status has not updated after 5 minutes, use the Verify Payment option in the Payments section (entering your payment reference) to trigger a manual status check. If the issue persists, contact Shelta support with your Paystack reference number.
No. The payment amount is fixed by the platform for each transaction type. You cannot overpay or split payments. If you want to discuss a payment arrangement, contact the Shelta team directly.
Shelta Asset uses Paystack, which accepts Nigerian debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Verve) and bank transfers where available. International cards may work depending on your bank’s configuration.
